Manish's idea of 'Free Spirit' woman
I’m breaking away from what I’ve designed earlier...’..says designer Manish Malhotra about the ‘Free Spirit’ statement of LFW winter 2007.
On speaking with Manish Malhotra, the grand finale designer of the Lakme Fashion Week, one couldn’t miss the excitement bubbling inside him. Discussing his views on the trilogy of the ‘Free Spirit’ collection, Manish describes ways about how different he plans to get from his previous expressions.
Interpreting his idea of the ‘Free Spirit’ woman, Manish says that the ‘Free Spirit’ woman is unrestrained and full of mystery.
Lets put it like this, “She could be discussing art in a gallery opening on one day. And helping her younger sister with her CAT exams the next day. She could be writing about an article on gourmet food one day and eating pani puri at Khau Galli the next day. She could be could be setting off for Cannes Film Festival one day and doing a street play for an NGO in rural Madhya Pradesh the next day. Such is her versatility.”
He added, you shouldn’t get taken in by the tailored business suit which could be broken. You think you have got her pegged and just then she will turn the tables on you and take you by surprise.
Variety assured, so, how different will Manish get this time? “Well, no more of the lehengas and kurtis. I am breaking away from what I’ve done earlier. Using a lot of textures, I am setting the look for a well-groomed modern woman. Colours such as maroons, blacks and reds will dominate the look. These are also the colours of the LFW, so it blends well with the overall theme.”
But why this sudden need to stand off the norm? Manish replies, “The ‘Free Spirit’ woman cannot be slotted into something predictable. Keeping the Indian body form in mind, this line is different depicting the experiences of varied cultures with a global feel to it.”
It’s been over 17 years since Manish has been designing costumes for films — his greatest passion till date. He has received nearly 23 awards, designed the look for over 1000 films and is a hit with Indian and international audiences.
