Acne problem:

What is acne?

Acne consists of those terrible, red, swollen, pus-filled pimples which are the every woman?s worst nightmare. The most common form of acne is known as acne vulgaris, usually found on women with oily skin. Acne occurs most often during puberty, because hormonal changes cause a greater secretion of sebum or oil. The oil blocks the pores, causing acne. Almost every woman will experience a few acne pimples at some point in her life.

There are various other factors that could cause acne.

  • Pores clogged by dirt or pollution.
  • An undue amount of stress.
  • Hormonal changes caused by menstruation.
  • Too many soft drinks and too much fried food or chocolates.
  • Do your parents have a pimple problem? Genes could be a factor.
  • Some forms of medication.
  • Dandruff or a greasy scalp. Certain types of products you use in your hair could also irritate your skin, causing acne.

While acne is commonly seen at adolescence, many women get it during pregnancy as well, again due to hormonal changes. However, a few months after delivery the acne subsides as the hormone levels normalize. Surprising as it may sound, many women get acne for the first time in their mid-thirties or forties! This type of acne is called ?acne rosacea?.

Benzoyl Peroxide Treatment

The next time you pick up a face wash or pimple cure cream read the list of ingredients to find out if it contains benzoyl peroxide, very effective for fighting acne. Acne is bacteria, growing in a clogged pore, and benzoyl peroxide fights bacteria. Just make sure you smear enough of it, and use it often. Your skin will start clearing up.

Fight acne on your back by making sure you scrub your back with a loofah or rough cloth while showering, after applying soap. Giving your bath a one minute scrub everyday will work wonders. If you exercise, take a shower after your workout. Don?t wait too long, or the sweat will dry up and clog pores, only aggravating the acne. Apply benzoyl peroxide on your back as well.

Benzoyl peroxide is drying, so if your face or back feels very dry, realize that this is normal. Once your face is clean, you can reduce the amount of cream you apply, and your skin will gradually return to normal.

Other Treatment Options

Antibiotics: Acne can usually be treated by antibiotics. Some antibiotics for acne are very strong, and have severe side effects. The hair may start falling, or the woman may even experience difficulty during childbirth. Never, ever take any acne medication that has been prescribed for another person.

The pill: Some birth control pills can also help treat acne. This is because the hormones in the pill can stabilize the hormones that are causing the oily sebum, which causes acne.

Lazer: Lazer treatments are also effective in treating acne, but this is an expensive option. However, acne medication could also make a rather large hole in your pocket as well!

Irritation: Avoid any form of irritation to your skin. Don?t pick at it or touch it too much, avoid scrubbing it with a harsh cloth, keep hair away from your face and never use substandard makeup.

Use lemon and honey if you have dry skin, use lemon and cucumber if you have oily skin. The lemon will almost certainly not make you break out, but different skins react differently. In any case, you will only be applying it for 15 minutes and then washing off, so chances of breaking out into pimples are slim. Your facial hair will not turn golden since lemon is a light bleaching agent.
Crush the cucumber slightly, and then squeeze out the juice with your hands, into a small bowl. Add a few drops of lemon and apply to your face to reduce the dark scars of acne to be lighter.

Blackheads problem:

Blackheads are often formed on oily skin. Remove blackheads regularly from your nose with the help of blackhead removal strips that you can get at the market. You should get the strips at most general stores. Wash your face regularly with Clean and Clear face wash, or some other face wash suitable for oily skin. Drink ten to twelve glasses of water daily.

Blackheads are caused by pores blocked with oil. We tend to believe that the black appearance is due to dirt, but in fact, it is simply oil or sebum which has turned black due to the oxidizing effect.

While it is easy to clean the surface of our face, making sure that our pores are clean takes a little more work than just a perfunctory splash of water.

Removal strips

Blackhead removal strips are readily available at all major departmental stores. All you need to do is to wet the strip, place the strip on your nose, which is where blackheads are very likely to form, leave it on till it dries completely, and peel it off.

Steam

You could also try removing blackheads yourself, but make sure you are gentle, or you may cause scarring. Steam your face for around ten minutes with a steamer, or by placing your face over a vessel of boiling water if you do not have a steamer. Form a tent with your towel over your head and around the bowl, to trap the steam. This opens and softens pores, and makes the blackheads easier to remove. Then take a wad of cotton in both hands, and use the cotton to gently squeeze out the blackheads.

Exfoliate

Make sure the blackheads don?t reappear by exfoliate your skin with a face scrub, to get rid of dead skin so they do not block pores. Use it on your nose, or wherever you have blackheads. Scrub the area gently. Do not be too harsh as you may cause further damage.

While you need exfoliate your face only twice a week, many women have reported that their blackheads on their nose have totally disappeared after they started using a face scrub on their nose on a daily basis.

Homemade face scrub

You could purchase a face scrub from the market, or make one at home. Beat up the white of an egg, and add a tablespoon of salt. Apply to your face with your fingertips, massaging gently. Wait for it to dry, and wash off with warm water.

You could also make a scrub by adding salt to a lemon and honey mixture. After scrubbing your face, apply a little yogurt to soothe your complexion and balance the pH level.

Prevention

  • These are temporary remedies, and blackheads will keep re-appearing unless you target the source. Make sure you keep your skin clean, by cleansing, toning and moisturizing it twice a day.
  • Do not apply make up if your face is sweating. Always clean your face before applying make-up.
  • Make sure you wash off all traces of makeup before turning in for the night. Never, ever go to bed with make-up still on, as it contributes to blocking pores, and will lead to pimples and blackheads.
  • Avoid using oil-based make-up if you have oily skin and are prone to developing blackheads.

White Heads:

The best way to keep whiteheads at bay is to exfoliate skin regularly. Use a face scrub once or twice a week, and make sure you scrub face gently. Mix three parts baking soda with one part water, for a great homemade face scrub. If your skin is dry, moisturise it regularly. Avoid thick creams, and every once in a while, go for a facial/clean-up at the parlour.

pimples           Pimples problem:

What causes a Pimple?

A number of things can cause a pimple:

  • An improper diet that includes too many soft drinks, spicy and fried food and snacks with high iodine content
  • Pores clogged by dirt or pollution
  • Stress
  • Hormonal changes due to menstruation
  • Genes - blame it on the folks

Prevention is better than cure:

Wash Right

Wash your face regularly, not more than 3 times a day, unless you're living in a highly humid and/or polluted city which requires more washing to unclog pores. The best way to wash the face is to first lather your face-wash in your hands, apply it to wet skin and rinse. Pat dry. Scrubbing only aggravates the skin and causes further problems.

Cleansing Routine

Cleanse, tone and moisturise your face twice a day. Don't skip the moisturising step even if you have oily skin - just use an oil-free moisturiser.

Exposure to the elements

Avoid exposing your skin to the harsh elements. If you are going for a long drive, roll up your window slightly, so your face doesn't get plummeted by the wind, especially in polluted towns.

Water

Drink plenty of water to detox your system. Impure blood and poor circulation is one of the primary causes of acne.

Eat Right

Unless you are allergic to certain foods, eating junk food doesn't lead to the formation of pimples. But overeating certain foods, especially heating foods like chocolates and mangoes, can lead to an overnight zit congregation.

Get rid of that zit - ice ice baby!

No! Don't burst it! That's the worst thing you can do! It may solve your problem temporarily so you won't go to that dinner with a large white bud blossoming on your mug, but the scar will remain for a long, long time. Instead, try wrapping an ice cube in a thin muslin cloth and place it for about three minutes on a pimple that is just forming. It kills the growth of the pimple. Believe it, it is true.

If a pimple does burst accidentally (or intentionally!), wash the area with soap. Then reach for a lemon slice and squeeze ten drops into a cotton ball. Keep it on the burst pimple for about 10 minutes. The scar will vanish.

Lime n' Lemony

Lemon maintains the pH balance of skin, and it is a good idea to give your face a rinse of lemon water once a day. Just squeeze half a lemon into half a mug of water and splash it on your face. Rinse off the residue with regular water.

Dandruff:

Very often dandruff causes pimples. Wash your hair with an anti-dandruff shampoo twice a week. You could even wash your hair every alternate day or everyday - but then use a mild shampoo for daily wash instead of an anti-dandruff one. Oil your hair once a week, and wash off after an hour. Drink about 10-12 glasses of water in a day. Steer clear from chocolates, cashewnuts, soft drinks, wafers, non-veg and fried foods. Wind plays havoc with the skin. When travelling in a train, cab, bus or car, don't sit next to the window, or roll it up. Wash your face with a face wash twice a day. Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

The best remedy for dandruff is to wash your hair twice a week with an anti-dandruff shampoo. Try Selsun, which is a medicated shampoo. It is highly effective. Anti-dandruff shampoos tend to be a little harsh on the hair, so make sure you apply oil to your hair at least once a week. Use Selsun only until you still have dandruff, and after your problem has resolved, switch to a regular shampoo, and use Selsun around once a month or less, to keep the dandruff under control.

Wash your hair more regularly, at least twice a week. Try switching shampoos. Head and Shoulders is a pretty effective anti-dandruff shampoo for most people. Before washing hair, apply oil. Massage your scalp with hot oil for about 20 minutes, and leave it on for at least half an hour before washing off. Because of pollution etc, hair gets very dirty and needs to be washed at least twice a week, unless your hair is very dry and damaged. Plus, if you leave oil in the hair without washing it off, the oil absorbs more dirt, so always shampoo after applying oil.

Dark Circles       Dark Circles:

Causes

Dark circles are often caused due to sleeplessness or disturbed sleep. If you find yourself developing dark circles, you need to first catch up on your sleep. Genetics too could predispose you to developing dark circles.

Other factors causing dark under-eye circles include:

  • Drinking an excess of beverages that contain caffeine.
  • Smoking
  • Allergies
  • Thyroid problems
  • A lack of iron in your body during menstruation. This often contributes to dark circles, which is why some women have a tendency to develop dark circles during their period.

If you do not drink at least eight glasses of water everyday, you are not providing your body with as much water as it requires for flushing out toxins. Do not wait until you are thirsty before drinking up. By the time your body cries Im thirsty!, you are already severely dehydrated.

8. Avoid stepping out in the sun, especially between noon to four, when the sun is at its strongest. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes, and the delicate skin around it, from the harmful effects of UV radiation.

9. Apply a cold, used tea bag to your eyes. You could also applied used, cold, herbal tea leaves to your eyes, to sooth them.

10. Apply a concealer to the area under your eyes, to hide dark circles. Use a colour that is every so slightly lighter than the shade of your skin. Apply the concealer gently; do not stretch or pull the skin from this delicate area.

11. Lie down, close your eyes and apply cucumber or potato slices to your lids. Leave on for ten minutes and remove. Wash the area with cold water. This soothes tired eyes instantly, and helps boost blood circulation in the under-eye area.

12. Try out dark circle remover creams available in the market. Make sure they are of a recognized brand before applying them to your face.

Dark Lips:

If your black lips have been caused by drinking too much tea, coffee or by smoking, you will need to cut it down before your lips can lighten. Apply Vaseline to your lips regularly. Ghee is also very good, apply a little ghee every night. This keeps lips moisturised. You could also apply lemon juice to your lips daily, to lighten them slightly. Wear lipstick with sunscreen, as uv radiation may cause pigmentation.

Dry and Dull Skin:

Never wash your face with hot water, no matter how cold it is. Always use cold or lukewarm water to wash your face. Apply egg yolk to your face - it will nourish and moisturise your skin. Honey is also an excellent moisturiser. Wash off after ten to fifteen minutes. This should help combat dryness. Use a non-alcohol, moisturising toner. Also, carry a moisturising spritzer with you all day, so you can spray your face with moisturiser every now and again, even over makeup.

DRY SKIN

CLEANSING FOR DRY SKIN

Remember the basics
- Drink at least eight glasses of water a day to keep your skin well   hydrated.
- Eat a high-quality diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
- Limit sun exposure.

- As your skin is dry, you need to pump some moisture into it, so use a moisturising, oil based cleanser.

The good part about dry skin is that you probably wont have pimple problems or be traumatised by acne, but the offside is that dry skin ages earlier, so you've got to lather on the moisturiser.

Tip from the kitchen shelf
Warmed milk cures roughened skin. So for a great homemade cleanser, try this milk lotion. Warm a cup of milk and add 1 teaspoon glycerine, 1/4 teaspoon soda bicarbonate and 1/4 teaspoon borax. When all three dissolve, remove milk from fire. Melt together in a bowl 12 tablespoons white Vaseline (petroleum jelly), 4 tablespoons baby oil and 1 tablespoon bees wax. Add the milk mixture, and when heated, remove from fire. Add a few drops of rose essence and store in a jar. Use this to clean your face. Apply, and wipe off with damp cotton wool.

You need to be gentle with your skin starting now. Use an oil based cleanser. Cleansing milks are gentler than cleansing clear lotions. You could, alternatively, use a moisturising face wash like Dove. When you wash your face, use luke warm water. Steer clear from hot water.

OILY SKIN

CLEANSING FOR OILY SKIN

You're going to want to dry up some of that grease - the evil glue that sticks all that filth to your face. Use a face wash formulated for oily skins like Clean and Clear to rid your skin of the filth that clogs up your pores and starts the acne eruptions we've all so enjoyed at some point in our life. But there is good news for those with oily skin. You'll age slower than your dry skin counterparts, as wrinkles will start forming at a later age. However, your chances of being plagued by pimples are a lot higher. You can't have it all!

Tip from the kitchen shelf
Try this great cleansing scrub. Mix 1/4 cup Multani Mitti (Fuller's Earth), 1/4 cup dried orange peel and 2 tablespoon sandalwood powder, and store in a container in the bathroom. Take one teaspoon mixed with water and work it into the skin. Rinse off with warm water. Use every other day.

Exfoliate

This is the process of removing dead skin cells from your face so that the only layer visible is one of bright and healthy new cells. The average human generates a new layer of skin every two to four weeks and while new skin is being generated, cruddy old skin cells just sit around on your face. You can improve your complexion tremendously by sloughing off the garbage to show off the new stuff.

Exfoliators usually contain minuscule pieces of grit that, when rubbed on your skin, dislodge the dead skin cells.

Don't be fooled by the pretty names like apricot scrub. The stuff can really hurt and you've got to handle with care. Be gentle when you're rubbing it on your face. Nothing can ruin your skin like rough handling.

The older you grow, the less frequently you should exfoliate.

And as you have dry skin, you've got to lather it on generously.

How often should you follow this cleansing routine
Twice a day. In the morning, and at night before going to bed. It is a good idea to let your skin breathe while you sleep, so wash your face about half an hour after applying moisturiser, so it would have absorbed a sufficient amount by the time you wash it off.

Tip from the kitchen shelf
Curd is a great moisturiser for oily skin. Apply it to the face, leave on and wash off.

Sun protection

Never step out without lathering on sunscreen. Though most of us hate it's unsightly white texture, it's better to put up with that than to roam around with crow's feet at the young age of 35. A moisturiser with a built-in sunscreen may not provide as much protection, but it's a pretty decent alternative if you're not going to be hanging around outdoors. And yes, you should apply sunscreen during the day even if you are going to be indoors.

Tip from the kitchen shelf
Make a paste of besan and a little water. Apply this to your t-zone. Scrub off after 7-10 minutes, when the mixture has dried. Follow up by splashing your face gently with lukewarm water.
