Looking forward to Bollywood in 2008

31st Dec 2007  22.20 IST
By Aparajita Ghosh

Hindi film industry will keep its stride to greater milestones in year 2008.

After a critically-acclaimed Bollywood film Taare Zameen Par and comedy ceries like Hey Baby’, ‘Partner’ and ‘Welcomerocking the box office in 2007 , 2008 will witness a return of big action thrillers on the Bollywood scene.

Year 2007 saw Bollywood filmmakers attempting to break the shackles of the past, defy the set stereotypes and dabble in experimentation. Some of these experiments may have failed but what is laudable is the newfound spirit to make different and better films. This spirit is likely to continue next year.

January will be the month of actor Ajay Devgan. The first big release of the year would be Rajkumar Santoshi’s Halla Bol, a film that tackles a socially relevant subject. This would be followed by another Devgan-starrer Sunday, a comedy starring a host of talented actors. Later in the year, we would also see Devgan making his directorial debut in U Me Aur Hum which has him pairing with wife Kajol.

In February will come the film we all have been waiting for long – Jodhaa Akbar, starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai . In March, Hrithik may shoot for an item number in his dad’s production venture Krazzy 4. Later in the year, if his injured knee is fully healed, Hrithik will begin shooting for another home production to be directed by Anurag Basu.

The first half of the year will also see Saif Ali Khan in two films – Race with Bipasha Basu and Tashan with Kareena Kapoor. The actor will also shoot for Kunal Kohli’s next film for Yashraj banner with Rani Mukherjee.

Speaking of Yashraj, Bipasha will be seen playing the leading lady of newcomer Ranbir Kapoor in another production of the banner to be directed by Siddharth Anand.

Also catch Bollywood Movies, Bollywood Actor and Actresses, Bollywood Gossips, Bollywood and cricket

Superstar Amitabh Bachchan will be seen in a number of superhuman roles in flicks – Aladdin in which he plays a genie, Bhootnath in which he plays a ghost, God Tussi Great Ho in which he plays god. And there is also Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar Raj which brings Amitabh, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai together again after the Kajrare song. This time the three Bachchans would be seen in neatly etched roles.

The junior Bachchan will be seen in a superhero flick called Drona , which is presently in production stages. Abhishek has already begun shooting Rakeysh Mehra’s Dilli 6 with Sonam Kapoor . He will also make a special appearance in director Apoorva Lakhia’s film Mission Istanbul which has Vivek Oberoi in main role.

After Abhishek and Vivek, it is natural to jump to Salman Khan who will have quite an eventful 2008 with Boney Kapoor’s thriller Wanted Dead And Alive , ‘God Tussi Great Ho’, Hello (cameo appearance), Subhash Ghai’s Main Yuvraj with Katrina Kaif and a home production Main Aur Mrs Khanna with Kareena Kapoor.

Compared to 2007, which saw her in one film ( Jab We Met ), 2008 will be a busy year for Bebo. She will be seen playing a suspicious housewife in Golmaal Returns , a fearless bimbo in ‘Tashan’ and a high society girl in 'Kambakht Ishq' opposite Akshay.

Also catch Bollywood Movies, Bollywood Actor and Actresses, Bollywood Gossips, Bollywood and cricket

Akshay Kumar , the darling of masses, will take a break from comedy in ‘Tashan’. He will also shoot for an action thriller called ‘Chandni Chowk To China’. Akki will return to comedy in Singh Is King and to romance in ‘Kambakht Ishq’. But the most unusual film he will be seen in 2008 will be Nagesh Kukunoor’s supernatural thriller 'Eight By Ten', said to be inspired from Manoj Night Shyamalan’s ‘The Sixth Sense’.

Nagesh directs another mainstream star John Abraham in a celluloid drama called Aashayein – a story of a reckless gambler who discovers that he has few days left to live. John will also shoot for Deepa Mehta’s film Luna in early 2008.

Aamir Khan , who had a terrific ending of 2007 with Taare Zameen Par , will be seen in the Hindi remake of Tamil hit Ghajini . He will also produce a campus romance called Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and an English film called Delhi Belly . The actor might also do a film with Rajkumar Hirani.

Among other stars, Priyanka Chopra will be seen in Love Story 2050 with beau Harman Baweja. Vidya Balan pairs with Shahid Kapur in Lucky Charm . Sanjay Dutt will be seen in Easy Monthly Installment and might begin the next film in the Munnbhai series. Sanju will also launch his own production house in 2008.

"Jaane tu ya jaane na"

Bollywood Movies: Jaane tu ya jaane na

Production Credits
Director: Abbas Tyrewala
Producer: Aamir Khan
Written by: Abbas Tyrewala

Cast
Imran Khan - Jai Singh Rathore
Genelia D'Souza - Aditi
Manjari Fadnis - Meghna
Ratna Pathak
Naseeruddin Shah

Opposites attract. But they do repel as well. Such is the story of Jai and Aditi, the protagonists of ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’.

The movie introduces Aamir Khan’s nephew Imran Khan opposite Genelia D'Souza , who has already acted in a couple of Bollywood films.

Set in a college campus, the film is a tale of friendship, bonding and love. It is about discovering love in one’s heart.

Imran Khan as Jai Singh Rathore

Jai is a Rajput, but he can’t even kill an ant. He is perhaps the most non-violent Rajput you would find in either side of the Aravallis.

Genelia as Aditi

Aditi is the diametric opposite of Jai. She is violent and over-passionate. The most unfortunate thing a person can do is pick a fight with her. When Aditi shoots off her mouth, there is no stopping her.

Synopsis:

For all the right reasons, Jai thinks Aditi’s parents should have rinsed her mouth with soap when she was a kid. Then, perhaps, she would have been mellower.

On the other hand, Aditi thinks Jai is a coward. There is nothing Rajput-like in him.

Two distinct personalities at the same place and same time. Heaven seems to have mixed up apples with oranges.

And there are others as well in the campus group. There is Rotlu who weeps secretly for Aditi. There is Bombs whose heart throbs for Jai. There is Jiggy who applies golden mascara to his hair. And there is Shaleen, the ever-enthusiastic guitar player.

Everybody thinks Jai and Aditi are perfect for each other despite their contrasting personalities. But do Aditi and Jai think so?

Do they really know what their hearts desire? Will they find love in each other?

‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’ marks the directorial debut of Abbas Tyrewala who has written films like Maqbool , Munnabhai MBBS and Main Hoon Na .

The movie also brought back the prodigal director Mansoor Khan from his self-chosen hibernation. Mansoor is the film’s producer along with Aamir Khan .

The film’s music is given by A R Rahman while the songs are written by Abbas Tyrewala.

The movie also has special appearances by a host of actors like Naseeruddin Shah , Arbaaz Khan , Sohail Khan , Arshad Warsi and Paresh Rawal .

‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’ will hit the theatres on July 4, 2008.

"De Taali"

Bollywood Movies: bollywood_De Taali

Director: E Niwas
Cast: Aftab Shivdasani, Ritesh Deshmukh, Saurabh Shukla, Pawan Malhotra, Ayesha Takia, Rimi Sen, Satish Shah, Anupam Kher and Mukul Dev

De Taali has reached the theaters and the verdict is out - there is nothing in this film that makes you feel like giving a clap (taali). One of the major faults with the movie is its story, or rather the lack of it. On top of that, the movie changes momentum every now and then, throwing you completely out of track. The predictability of the script acts like the final nail in the coffin. The editing is not up to the mark, with continuity between the scenes often found lacking. Though the screenplay takes off to a good start initially, it fails miserably in the end. The only solace in the film is Riteish Deshmukh, who seems to be turning out a master of comedy. If it wasn’t for him, the audience wouldn’t even have the solace of occasional laughs. As for Ayesha Takia, she is getting better day by day. Aftab Shivdasani, otherwise a fine actor, did not seem to have his heart in the film. Rimi Sen, as the con-woman, is quite convincing and definitely gives a good performance. The only thing that we now wonder is that what was Anupam Kher doing in the film? His great talent has been miserably wasted.

De Taali Pre-release Review
Get ready to lose yourself in the world of love, laughter and friendship. We are talking about the film ‘De Taali’, scheduled to be released on 20th June 2008. Falling in the genre of comedy/ romance, the movie is directed by E Niwas and produced by Ravi Walia. It will be released under the banner of Rising Star Entertainment. Its music directors are Shekhar Ravjiani and Vishal Dadlani, who has also provided the lyrics, along with Abbas Tyrewala. The star cast of De Taali includes Aftab Shivdasani, Ritesh Deshmukh, Saurabh Shukla, Pawan Malhotra, Ayesha Takia, Rimi Sen, Satish Shah, Anupam Kher and Mukul Dev. The story of ‘De Taali’ revolves around the life of three friends Abhishek - Abhi (Aftab Shivdasani), Amrita - Amu (Ayesha Takia) and Paglu (Ritesh Deshmukh). They are very close to each other, despite the differences, and form an integral part of each others lives. Abhi is a rich guy, who keeps falling in love with almost every beautiful girl he comes across. Paglu, true to his name, keeps on making weird plans and being excited about them. Amongst the trio, it is Amu who is the sweetest and always keeps tending to Abhi’s broken heart. Amu and Paglu always remain concerned about Abhi - that he might make a very wrong choice one day, as far as girls are concerned. Unknown to her, Amu’s feelings for Abhi are slowly turning from mere friendship to love. However, as time passes, she becomes aware of her own feelings and also starts believing that even Abhi considers her more than a friend. The illusion is broken when Abhi tells her and Paglu about Kartika (Rimi Sen), a hot babe who has just made an entry into his life.
Paglu, being aware of Amu’s feelings for Abhi, starts concocting plans to bring the two closer. He is busy in formulating one or the other plan to make Abhi notice Amu as someone more than just a friend. At the same time, Paglu and Amu also come to know that Kartika is a con-woman trying to take advantage of the innocent Abhi. Will Paglu and Amu be able to bring the real face of Kartika before Abhi? Will Amu be able to win the love of Abhi? What will happen to Paglu? Wait for 20th June, when all questions will beanswered with the release of the movie.

Aamir

Bollywood Movies: bollywood_Aamir
Director: Raj Kumar Gupta
Cast: Rajeev Khandelwal
Rating: ** ½

From the outset, Aamir starts off as an intriguing thriller about a common man forced into criminal exploitation in the course of a day. Aamir Ali (Rajeev Khandelwal) lands at the Mumbai airport only to discover that his family has been kidnapped and he has been turned scapegoat by an extremist group to indulge in a heinous crime. From there starts his journey in the beleaguered by-lanes of Mumbai city as he keeps running on the tunes of the terrorists with no clue about their stealthy mission. By the time he awakes to his assignment, realization strikes that he has been embroiled in a bombing conspiracy. The basic premise of the film is engaging enough with its suspense-thriller setup. The screenplay adopts a blitzkrieg technique of uninterrupted bombardment of a series of scenes that are high, both, on the shock value and realistic treatment. But the thrills are backed on the much-exploited motive of the victimized Muslim that we have come across for the zillionth time this year post a slew of films like Black and White, Shaurya, Khuda Kay Liye, Hope and a Little Sugar that dealt with the issue on varying intensities. Though this one doesn't implement a moral outlook towards the issue till the climax and refrains from getting preachy, a déjà vu factor does seep in the script. The disturbing camera movements by Alphonse Roy as well as the erratic background score by Amit Trivedi elevate the effect on a subconscious level. Filming sequences at actual locations from the lean lanes of Dongri to the shoddy guest houses of Bandra show Mumbai in an entirely different outlook. Director Raj Kumar Gupta refrains from resorting to the regular formula of a romance angle, song-n-dance track, item numbers, et al and attempts to tread a distinctive path. But as the proceedings progress towards the climax, the film seems to lose fizz. Aamir suffers from the regular thriller setback of an interesting built-up but a lackluster culmination. Also a major blemish of the film is it fails to explain why Aamir was specifically chosen for the terrorist activity when the radical group having a deep network could have effortlessly employed any of their henchmen on the task. One wonders the relevance of a solitary flashback scene shot in London (or was it an excuse for the crew for an official foreign trip) which is as uncalled-for as the use of a single expletive that the film could have conveniently done without. From the almost anonymous but able cast, Rajeev Khandelwal comes up with a restrained and natural performance of a troubled common man. Gajrao Rao comes up with an equally competent act as the vicious villain.

Aamir is opulent on ideation but is not as rich on execution and most importantly culmination.

'U Me Aur Hum' set for clash with 'Krazzy 4'
28th Feb 2008

Ajay Devgan’s directorial debut is on a collision course with Rakesh Roshan’s home production.

A lull has taken over the theatres as the month of March (which sees lowest turnout at box-office due to the school and college exams) approaches. The lull will be broken by a tornado in April when Fridays would be crammed with Bollywood releases.
April 11 will see the release of two big films – ‘U Me Aur Hum’ and ‘Krazzy 4’.

U Me Aur Hum marks the return of Ajay Devgan and Kajol together as a pair after a long gap of eight years. The film is also Devgan’s directorial debut. All this, coupled with the film’s feelgood theme, has roused quite a curiosity about ‘U Me Aur Hum’.

And feeling the heat is Rakesh Roshan whose home production Krazy 4 has no big stars in main roles ( Arshad Warsi , Irrfan Khan , Suresh Menon, Rajpal Yadav and Juhi Chawla ) and is directed by a newcomer named Jaideep Raja Sen.

Clearly, ‘U Me Aur Hum’ has an upper hand over ‘Krazzy 4’.

In fact, reports have it that Roshan senior has got in touch with Devgan to discuss any possible way to avoid the clash between the two films. But Devgan couldn’t make any adjustment because the marketing and distribution plans have already been drawn for his film.

On the other hand, Roshan senior also cannot postpone his film even by a week because it would then get sandwiched between two big movies – ‘U Me Aur Hum’ (on April 11) and Yashraj Films Tashan (on April 25).

For the time being it appears that the clash between Devgan’s and Roshan’s films is inevitable.

"Halla Bol"
The year's first major release "Halla Bol", which is based on politics, has a fair amount of action. Both director Rajkumar Santoshi and the film's lead star, Ajay Devgan, are known to thrive on action films. Actress Vidya Balan played as Ajay Devgan's lady.
"I have gone all the way to send my message across through this film and this is that social change is not possible unless everybody puts in their bit to bring in the change instead of expecting others to do so. Yes, movie has some action scenes to carry it forward to its logical conclusion," said Santoshi.

"My Name is Anthony Gonsalves".
Also being released this Friday is the Mithun Chakraborty starrer "My Name is Anthony Gonsalves". Nikhil Dwivedi’s debut film My Name is Anthony Gonsalves, has not yet released, but the man is surely creating a buzz in the industry. Though Nikhil has managed to keep safe distance from the media till the release date of his film comes close, we haven’t forgotten that Nikhil is one upcoming debutants. Unlike, other newcomers who generally debut with equally unknown costars, Nikhil is one those courageous actors who will share the screen space with some biggest stars in the industry in his very first film. My Name is Anthony Gonsalves stars Amrita Rao as Nikhil’s lady love and the evergreen and simply – refusing- to-age Mithun Chakraborty. The film is directed by E. Niwas and produced by Sahara Motion Pictures, with its scintillating music by none other than Pritam!

"Bombay to Bankok"
Director Nagesh Kukunoor and actor Shreyas Talpade team up for third film in a row. After Iqbal and Dor which were very sensitive movies telling the story of a deaf-mute boy who harbors a dream of making to the Indian Cricket team as a pace bowler and story of two women – one who undertakes a long journey to save her love, its a third movie of both. In the season of brainless comedies, Nagesh Kukunoor’s rom-com ‘Bombay To Bangkok’ strives to be different. And it is indeed different to the extent that you will scowl at the “funny” scenes, and laugh at those meant to be serious.
Starring in the movie as Shreyas Talpade, Naseeruddin Shah, Lena Christensen.

"Sunday"
Thankfully, ‘Sunday’ is not a senseless comedy like Welcome . It doesn’t string one gag after another without any direction to the story. ‘Sunday’ does have an engaging tale, a murder mystery, at its heart. Around it revolves the humour – a healthy cocktail of situational comedy and plain slapstick. Add to it some stunts, action and romance. And voila, you have the recipe for a true-blue masala entertainer. That is what ‘Sunday’ is.

"Jodhaa-Akbar"
Releasing in the beginning of the year will be Ashutosh Gowarikar’s much awaited magnum opus ‘Jodha Akbar’, dealing with the “never told before” love story between Mughal emperor Akbar and his Hindu queen Jodhabai. Featuring the ‘hot’ pairing of Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, the lavishly mounted period film is the most awaited film of the year.
A major movie that is eliciting a mixed response in trade circles is UTV Motion Pictures' "Jodhaa-Akbar", due for a Feb 15 release. This Rs.400 million period movie, directed and co-produced by Ashutosh Gowarikar, is based on the romance between Emperor Akbar and Rajput princess Jodhabai and has Hrithik Roshan and Aishwariya Rai playing the protagonists.

The questions being asked is if the audience will accept a period drama in today's times and whether they will accept Hrithik playing a historical character.
But otherwise "Jodhaa-Akbar" is expected to be a sheer spectacle to watch.UTV also has

On an average, Rs.200 million has gone into producing each of these films. How much the market will fetch? Distributors have refused to do any guesswork. Obviously.

"Each producer may say his is the best film of the lot. We know how much each venture is worth. But no distributor can say how much revenue a film may generate at the box-office. There is no foolproof way for value evaluation. But at all times, we hope for the best," said a spokesman of Studio 18.

By Agencies

Fashion designer Manish Malhotra plans to lock the film script for his first directorial venture in 2008, which will have the look of the cinema of the 1970s.

“I plan to lock the script in 2008 and ask the stars to work in my directorial debut in showbiz,” Manish is quoted by a news agency. Disclosing about the kind of film he planned to make, Manish said: “I want to make a film that I would love to see. My intention is not to change the film industry. My film will have the look of the '70s because that's the kind of cinema I grew up on.”

Asked about his designs on Bollywood stars in current projects, he said: “I am designing clothes for Kajol in U Me Aur Hum which Ajay Devgan is directing, and Kareena Kapoor for Golmaal Returns .

Besides, there's Karan Johar's untitled production starring Priyanka Chopra and Kunal Kohli's film for Yash Raj Productions starring Saif Ali Khan , Rani Mukherjee and Amisha Patel .”

The favourite fashion designer of many Bollywood actresses like Kareena Kapoor and Urmila Matondkar, Manish has also designed clothes for bigwigs Shah Rukh Khan , Amitabh Bachchan , Akshay Kumar and even Rajnikant in the recent Tamil blockbuster Sivaji .

When asked why does he dress up men for films only, he dismissed it as a mere misconception.

"I do design clothes for men through my label Manish Malhotra but I am so much happier doing it for women. You can do so much more with them. There's make-up, hair. But I do agree that the ratio of my work for women is more than that for men.”

Asked about which male superstar among Shah Rukh, Amitabh and Rajnikant gave him the most satisfaction as a designer, Manish replied diplomatically, "I enjoy every moment of my work. Eventually, it's about everybody."
