Suave Karan Johar talks about style & fashion ...

He’s the man who brought fashion into Bollywood through his great-looking movies. The gloss in his films is reflective of his own personal style. Designing is a passion with him and he’s been incredible at the job, especially when it comes to creating fashion for his superstar-buddy Shah Rukh Khan. Here Karan talks about his definition of style.

  • Describe style. :
Style for me is a reflection of your inner self. It has nothing to do with couture or materialistic possessions. It’s how well you carry off your clothes. Someone who has style, doesn’t need fashion.
  • What’s your weakness when it comes to fashion?
I like formal attires. I think jackets and jeans really make me look nice. I am a complete shirt person and don’t like T-shirts. All in all, I prefer outfits that make me look slimmer. Otherwise, I am fond of structured outfits.
  • Who, according to you, are the true fashion icons today? Undoubtedly, it’s Amitabh Bachchan as he carries himself with tremendous panache. Even if he is wearing a red jacket, he’ll make it look so immaculate. I also admire David Beckham as he is constantly evolving and reinventing himself.
  • Any preferences when it comes to international designers?
I have met a genius designer like Tom Ford. I just shook hands with him. I think he is the best and in such a short span, he’s reinvented so many labels. I also like sportswear by Prada.
  • They say you have a fetish for fashion accessories.
I am fond of sunglasses. I also have a special liking for Louis Vuitton bags and I keep buying them.
  • Were you into fashion as a kid?
As a kid, I was overweight and always had this aspiration to look good and better. So that desire brought me into fashion.
  • Tell us something about your grooming regimen.
I don’t go for manicures or pedicures. I colour my hair as they are greying.
  • What's your take on the Indian fashion scene?
The Indian fashion scene is booming. Every fashion week sees the emergence of a new talented designer. In 10 years from now, India will definitely produce John Galliano and Versace. I admire Manish Malhotra and Sabysachi Mukherjee. I like Manish because he’s passionate about his work. He has a tremendous sense of colour, style and femininity. I feel that he is the most quintessential designer in India.
  • What’s your health and fitness regime?
I run on the treadmill twice or thrice a week. I have recently started workouts with a trainer. I also do cardiovascular exercises.

BOLLYWOOD FASHION

Vidya Balan's bad dress sense?

Do you know who is to be said the most unfashionable bollywood actress in the media? It's Vidya Balan!

It all began at the Filmfare Awards when actor Vidya Balan was given the na-real award for her horrendous clothes in Heyy Babyy.

Saif and SRK introduce their own in-formal awards known as the Na-Real awards. The Award trophies are in a coconut shape. And the Na-Real Award for Wardrobe Malfunction has been bagged by none other than their co- hostess, Vidya Balan for her look in Heyy Babyy.

We had heard that Vidya was unhappy with the costumes designed for her in movies Bhul Bhulaiya and Heyy Babyy. But it is to be said now that Vidya is most unfashionable bollywood actress and she is having horrified sense of fashion.

However, the issue has gone a bit too far. And now there are blame games. While Vidya Balan holds fashion designer Manish Malhotra and director Sajid Khan also responsible for her avatar in Heyy Babyy , Manish says, how can she justify what she was wearing at the Filmfare Awards then?

Now, Heyy Babyy producer Sajid Nadiadwala has stepped into the picture to support her kapda mishap. He told us, "I think people have taken this whole thing a bit too far. It's unfair. Out of the seven changes in Heyy Babyy , two may have been jarring, but five were extra ordinary. Vidya is a fine actress. As a filmmaker we try different things, and not all experiments work out right. Also, I don't think her outfits were as bad as they are being made out to be."

Vidya took all this issue very sportingly. While asked her about the na-real award matter, she said with a giggle,"It was just a piece of clothes on my body yaar! I am very thankful that nobody is complaining about my work. As a performer I am doing well. So the fashion sense can be changed... "

Sweet of her to address the issue! But lets hope Vidya is more conscious of her clothes next time round and hires a good designer for herself. All the best Vidya, we would love to see you with a Real Fashion award and also with a best actress award.

Style check: Bollywood's fashion fundas

- By Tarunya Suresh

Fashion has always been an integral part of Bollywood. While looking at the growing standard of Indian fashion, Bollywood surely can’t be left far behind. It is obvious now that Bollywood’s hot chics are more interested in haute couture. We keep a close check on their style statements.

Bollywood Fashion: Sushmita Sen and Konkana Sen Sharma

bollywood fashion-Sushmita Sen

The first under surveillance are Bengali beauties Sushmita Sen and Konkona Sen Sharma. The two came together to support the cause of education at the launch of CRY's Shiksha scheme. While Sushmita looked cool and casual in her white kurti and blue jeans, Konkona looked sharp in a black kurta and antique silver jewellery. We wonder why Sushmita was sporting sunglasses inside the hotel, while Konkona's s up do certainly upped her glamour quotient. leek up do certainly upped her glamour quotient.

Sushmita Sen’s style quotient – 5/10
Konkona Sen Sharma’s style quotient – 7/10

Bollywood Fashion: Lara Dutta

bollywood fashion-Lara Dutta

Lara Dutta has always been known for her chic and glamorous style. The dusky diva looked every inch a fashionista in this white lace top and antique jewellery. Quite an interesting combination, we think. Lara also sports the season's hottest trend - fuchsia nails! The colour looks so hot on Lara's talons that we wouldn't mind devouring those va va voom fingers!

Lara’s style quotient – 8/ 10

Bollywood Fashion: Kareena Kapoor

bollywood fashion-Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor looked simply stunning at the audio launch of Jab We Met, where she was seen in an ultra glam silk fuchsia tube dress with velvet piping. The dramatic colour beautifully offset Bebo's peaches and cream complexion and her classy chandelier earrings made her look every bit the style diva that she is!

Kareena’s style quotient – 9/10

Bollywood Fashion: Preity Zinta

bollywood fashion-Preity Zinta

Ummmm, does Preity Zinta have a Sesame Street hangover? The usually stylish actress looked like a big bottle of mustard in this downright ugly and tacky canary yellow salwar kameez with gold embroidery. The colour does nothing for Preity's pale skin and the outfit seems two times too big for this petite actress. Preity, we think your stylist should be working weekends, too, honey!

Preity’s style quotient – 4/10

Bollywood Fashion: Urmila Matondkar

bollywood fashion-Urmila Matondkar

Urmila seems to have gone back in time, rehashing her pre Rangeela wardrobe! This Maharashtrian mulgi looks like the cover of an outdated early 90s magazine, where it was cool to S.P.E.L.L. out the designers’ name in bold letters. Her fake Armani Exchange Tee does nothing for her and her beige hipsters look like they are about to burst at the seams. And what’s that around her waist—her dog’s chain? We were just wondering!

Urmila’s style quotient – 4 /10

Bollywood Fashion: Priyanka Chopra

bollywood fashion-Priyanka Chopra

Ok! Really! Words fail me! Priyanka Chopra must have been feeling really 'blu' when she decided to give her stylist the nod and wear this excuse of a contraption. Easily the worst outfit Priyanka has ever sported, this blue dress with red piping in the most inappropriate places had us in a state of shock. The disgustingly fake diamond earrings and bracelet that she was wearing added insult to injury. So Piggy Chops... Next time cover your flesh with some atractive sossage...

Priyanka’s style quotient – Style? Huh?

Bollywood Fashion: Vidya Balan
