International buyers flock India Fashion Week
NEW DELHI: Indian designers and their dazzling creations are attracting a lot of foreign buyers from across the globe at the on-going India Fashion Week here in New Delhi.
While the designers beam in ecstasy in the splendour of their innovative and distinctive creations, a determination to club fashion with business clearly marks the event.
Buyers are making a beeline at the shows and business is coming from across the globe as India's talent gets international look-in.
"Indian clothes are very famous. But, each fashion week, the prices become higher and higher," said Manal Alduwaisan, a buyer who runs a store in Kuwait.
"The response has been good. We have been getting a lot of enquiries from international buyers, particularly from France, and it has been really good," said Ridhima, a debutante designer.
The buyers mean business, the groundwork for which is being laid at the fashion week.
"I am planning to start a distributorship in future and I am talking about a year from now that I would like to start. So, first the discussions and getting to know each other then hopefully build a strong relationship," said Erica Harp, a buyer from Netherlands.
Though a lucrative market awaits India designers in the west, they need to re-invent and mould themselves to cater to an international clientele.
"What we have noticed is that most Indian designers do very well in the Middle-East. The designers that have started actually looking at Europe and America have made a concerted effort to change their lines to suit those countries," said Tina Tahiliani, Executive Director of Ensemble, a retail store.
Indian fashion designers have often been criticised for not being trendsetters and copy-cats of western motifs to tap into an emerging global demand for high-end Western outfits with an Asian edge.
According to buyers from France, the US, the UK, Indian designers have a long way to go before they establish themselves in the international fashion arena. "If Indians want to have a share in the western market, they need to think really in this way in western style and bring their own personality, because it's possible for them to be present with a very strong personality," said Arnand Habida, a buyer from Paris.
While many buying houses are still trying to spot designers with serious potential, some of the designers like Tarun Tahiliani, Sabyasachi, Manish Arora, Ashish Soni have already got an impressive international clientele.
Over 80 international buyers from 19 countries and 100 domestic buyers are taking part at the Fashion Week this year, also boasting a participation of 71 designers.
Today the fashion design industry is worth $1.8 billion, growing at 20-30 per cent in the 35 billion dollars global fashion market.

Wills Lifestyle India fashion week opens
21 Mar, 2007, 1940 hrs IST, PTI
NEW DELHI: The fashion-conscious made their bi-annual pilgrimage to the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, whose autumn/winter edition opened today with the first major runway show featuring models dressed in flowing gowns of all hues created by reputed designers.
As many as 87 designers will preview their styles for the next season at the event, which would run till March 26 and boasts of attendance from over 80 international buyers from 19 countries, besides 100 domestic buyers.
"There are around 87 designers who would be showcasing their collections. However, not all of them are ramp shows. There would be around 56 ramp shows," Fashion Design Council of India President Rathi Vinay Jha said.
Popular names like Maria Luisa from Paris, Bloomingdales, Jashanmal from Kuwait and SunMotoyama from Japan would be shopping at the fashion fair this time around. Nearly 120 stalls have been set up at the venue, Hotel Ashoka, of which some are for accessories and jewellery designers.
Familiar names like Ritu Kumar, Rohit Bal and Tarun Tahiliani would feature in the premier event, while seven new designers are debuting with their Autumn-Winter collection, Jha said.
The designers are geared up to make most of the business opportunities that would come their way during the week-long event, to conclude on March 26. WIFW also has its eyes set on becoming an event in the fashion circuit that focuses as much on business as on designs. Corroborating this is the fact that the organisers have allocated March 26 exclusively for buyer-designer interaction.

Lakme India Fashion Week
Oct 19, 2007
A visual treat - glitz, glamour, shapely legs and toned torsos ...all in 35 shows. Come 18th and the curtains will go up on the much-hyped and high profile fashion extravaganza ...The Lakme India Fashion Week .With barely a day to go to for the mega event the tension is mounting and everybody is onto a rat race, fixing things in place. Fitting sessions are on at the well-known nightspot, the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) with choreographers including Lubna Adams camping there.
India's renowned designers will parade their Pret and Diffusion line. Among them will be Rohit Bal, Satya Paul, Tarun Tahiliani, Wendell Rodricks, Suneet Verma, Hemant Trivedi and Malini Ramani. The event would also encourage new talents to parade their pret and couture creations at the week-long affair. As we stepped behind the scenes yesterday, squeezing past leggy beauties, staying out of the way of stressed designers, choreographers we sneaked a peak at designer Tarun Tahiliani's fittings, which includes kaftans, drapes, chikans, dupattas, halters and jackets.
"Jitters only start at the fitting stage, but, with my fitting rounds already done, it is rather a very lethargic feeling waiting to see the real show on stage. LIWF is a superb arena and I hope the clothes should look correctly fit the models. I believe, fashion is all about fit than about embellishment and colour. That's why; finish of the clothes is the most important for any designer," said Tarun. Then we caught up with Arti, who too is showing her collection for the first time. Let's see what she has in store for the show. "I m working only with natural dyes. My collections are craft-based and that's what I want to bring at the forefront. Without any ornamentation with no zari and embroideries, using only textures and colours, I want to present my collections. There will be a mixture of Western and Indian garments using whole gamut of fabrics from cottons to silks, without using any chemical dyes would be unique features of my clothes. Silhouettes are simple and accent is only on the colours and fabrics", said Arti, designer.
And flaunting these creations will be 13 new models choosen by the FDCI. The list includes Uma Chiplunkar, Kaveri Khullaar, Gauhar Khan, Candice Pinto, Mridula Chandrashekhar, Kavita Kharayat to name a few. Like Dubai-based model Murtaza who will be making his first appearance on the Indian ramp at LIFW.
"Its' my first time in Mumbai and I am very excited to be a part of LIFW. Since these days we all are going through our fitting rounds, lots of interesting things are happening. That makes it a wonderful experience and I am looking forward to the final show. For male models it is much easier this year as there are few shows for them," said Murtaza.
But the focus of the Fashion Week is more trade-oriented, where the clothes showcased are representative samples, which can then be produced in larger quantities for sale through multiple outlets. Hence, the event takes on a more "serious business" orientation, as compared to mere couture shows. So the event is maturing in the direction of putting the Indian fashion industry as a force on the world map. However, for all the trendy and fashion conscious people it's certainly going to be a cool week with a spectrum of modern designs to choose from.
