How to Buy a Saree

How to Buy a Saree

Pick a Fiber

One of the first questions we ask at the Pramanik Shop is the purpose of buying the saree. Is it a gift to a lover? Is it for daily use or for festivities? Is the purchase motivated by a recent buy from a neighbor? (We ask them -"You mean like the one your neighbor bought the other day?!") This not only determines the price-range of the Saree, but also the fiber. Your choices are listed below, with sub choices in parenthesis.

  • Cotton (Handloom, Power loom, Janata  -- Government subsidized cotton, Calico--processed cotton)

  • Synthetic (Rayon, Polyester)

  • Silk (Banaras, Kanjeevaram, Irakal)

  • Jersey or poor man's silk

Pick a Texture

Sarees come in plethora of decorations: Zari (embroidered is fine gold fiber) works, glass works, prints, woven, Bandani (tie-dyed), embroidery, brasso are some of your choices.

Pick the Length

The most common length for a Saree these days is approximately. five meters (six yards). But depending on your body shape and style of wearing the Saree, you can decide on a specific length. Your choices would besarees of four yards, six yards, eight yards (almost obsolete now), and nine yards.

Pick a Color and Design

This is the hardest part. So many choices, so little time. For weddings we recommend derivatives of red with Golden Zari. For daily use, we usually recommend the off-brand name printed cotton sarees. For the fashion conscious, we recommend those being currently shown in television advertisements. Your choices include, but not limited to:

  • Printed floral designs and themes

  • Inter-woven designs (the reversible Sari)

  • Plain colored saree with designer pallu (or vice versa)

  • Saris with borders, without borders, or borders on either sides

  • Sarees with pallu, without pallu

  • Sarees with attached blouses

Pick a Brand Name

Some of the popular brand names for sarees are: Vimal, Khatau and some from Pramanik sarees shop etc.

Resist Vendor Pressure

The vendors fully understand the romance this purchase holds to you. But resist temptations. Modus Operandi:

  • "Can't decide between the purple and the golden? Get both"

  • "Girls, if you cannot decide on a Saree, how will you ever decide on a groom?"

  • "We know your budget is tight, But just for a little more money, You can buy what Madhuri Dixit buys"

  • "This is the latest fashion in Mumbai"

Buy Matching Accessories

A Saree being an unstitched piece of cloth, is vulnerable to borrowing by siblings, in-laws and friends. One of the ways to to customize the Saree is to find the exactly matching blouse and under-skirt, which are custom made for the person (cannot be borrowed).

While at it, do not forget the fall (see picture above), and a matching handkerchief.

Maintaining your silk sarees :

1. Dry-Cleaning is Preferable

Generally silk sarees should be dry-cleaned. In hand washing, the consistency of the silk may be altered, depending on the finishing treatment used to give it sheen and the colour may run. Chlorine bleach damages silk and causes it to yellow.

2. Washing Silks

Certain pre-wash techniques have made certain washable. Raw silk, china silk, India silk, crepe de chine, Pongee, Shantung, tussar, dupion and jacquard silks are safer to wash. After washing, one should roll in a towel to remove the excess moisture, and then hang on to dry on a padded hanger.

3. Stains

Stained silk sarees should be dry-cleaned as soon as possible. Dyes and sizings tend to discolour with moisture. Therefore attempting to remove stains with water is not recommended without first testing the silk for colour fastness. It is difficult to remove a concentrated food or beverage stain. Scrubbing or pressing could ruin the fabric.

Protein Stains: These stains include blood, deodorant, egg, meat juices and perspiration. To clear such stains, first detergent should be applied to the garment. Then it should be soaked in cool water and laundered. In case of persistent stains, rubbing a mixture of a few drops of Nh2 with hydrogen peroxide should be tried.

Combination Stains: These stains include chocolate, gravy, ice-cream and milk. First a dry-clean solvent should be applied and then dried. The protein part of the stain supplement can be treated by applying liquid detergent and rinsing with cool water. Then after using a prewash stain remover, the silk should be washed in the hottest water that it can stand.

Nailpolish Stain: This can be treated by rubbing acetone on the area.

Lipstick Stains: First Dry-cleaning fluids and then washing in soap and water can be used to remove lipstick stains.

Grease: These stains are usually caused by oils, butter, margarine, crayon, medicines and oil-based cosmetics. Dabbing on talc immediately will lift the stain. After brushing off the talc, a stain remover can be applied and the silk should be washed in the hottest water that it can stand.

Silkguard: Some manufacturers have developed a protective process using chemicals from 3 M corporation of US, which accidental spills (of tea, coffee, food particles, ketchup, oil, etc.) do not spoil the fabric. This treatment is effected at the yarn stage and hence the permeability of the fabric is not affected.

keep dress colors perfect

We love bright bold colors in our clothing. Color is beautiful, until it fades. A bright red shirt that you love can quickly turn into a piece of clothing you detest when it fades to a washed out pink.

For silk garments :
Dry clean only
Note: Silk garments are to be dry cleaned and not for home wash
1) Read the Care Label

It takes a few seconds, but reading the care labels may save a lot of heartache when your clothes come out of the wash. Check for instructions that may say to wash only in cold, or with like colors. Don't forget to check for drying instructions as well. The label may indicate that the clothing needs to be dried on low, or drip dried.

2) Wash Dark Colors Together

Sorting clothes is a great opportunity to check the care label, and place your clothing in the correct pile. Anyone who has ever washed one red sock with an entire load of whites, knows the pain that can happen when colors fade away. To prevent dark colors from fading, keep like colors together.

3) Turn Clothes Inside Out

Some of the wear and tear that happens on your clothing can be prevented by turning your clothing inside out before washing and drying. Washing and drying clothing is rough on the outside of your clothing. Turning garments inside out will reduce pilling which dulls the look of the fabric. Don't forget to turn clothing inside out when you hang clothes outside to dry. While the sun is an excellent and efficient drying tool, it will zap the color right out of your clothing.

4) Don't Stuff the Washer

Stuffing the washer is tempting. It will help us save time, right? Well, actually stuffing the washer can cost us quite a bit. It makes the machine work harder and it is tougher on our clothes. Clothing can't come clean or have soap evenly deposited when it is packed into a washing machine. Similarly clothing takes a lot longer to dry when a dryer is stuffed with wet cloths. Clothes need to move freely.

5) Wash in Cold

Colors in cold. This was the unofficial motto of my home growing up. If there is one thing I learned about laundry from my mother, it is that colors get washed in cold. If you want to prevent fading from your colored clothing, wash them in cold water. Detergents have come a long way in the last several years, and most do as well in cold water as the do in hot or warm.

6) Don't Over Dry

It's easy to let our clothing over. While this is bad for all of our laundry, it is particularly bad for our bright and dark colors. Over drying will cause your colors to fade. Set a timer and don't forget about your clothes. Clothes should be slightly damp when they are pulled from the dryer.

7) Add Vinegar

Vinegar doesn't have the most pleasant smell, but adding a cup to your washing machine will not only give you a natural fabric softener, but also help prevent colors from fading. The good news? The vinegar smell goes away in the wash.

8) Use the Gentle Cycle or a Gentle Detergent

If you still want to make sure your colors last as long as possible, you can wash on your machine's gentle cycle or hand wash your special clothing. There are several detergents on the market that are formulated to prevent fading and color loss.
