Maharashtrian Wedding dress

The Manipuri bridal dress is unique. It is essential for the bride to wear the Raslila skirt.

The Garos used to wear barks of trees, which had been pounded and softened to resemble thin cloth. Lower-class Garos still wear a tiny piece of cloth, which simply cover the genitals. Some tribes living in the deep forests of the Chittagong Hill Tracts still wear tree leaves as their only wedding dress. Santal(Santhal) dresses are called panchi, panchatat and matha. An Anglo Indian Christian bride traditionally wears a white wedding gown in western style. The full skirted gown is usually made of around five to seven metres of material but can vary according to pattern. In other sects of Christian community the bride's dress is usually a white or cream saree.

What is a White wedding?

A white wedding is a traditional formal or semi-formal Western wedding. The term refers to the white color of the wedding dress, which became popular in the Victorian era, after Queen Victoria wore a white lace dress at her wedding. Various theories for the meaning of this color choice have been put forward, from an appreciation of color symbolism, to represent purity of heart and the innocence of childhood, to an effort by the monarch to promote lace sales, to conspicuous consumption by status-conscious families, because a white dress could be easily damaged and was therefore common only among wealthy families. Later, it was believed that the color white symbolized virginity and should be worn only by a virgin bride.

Today, Western wedding dresses are usually white, though "wedding white" includes creamy shades such as eggshell, ecru and ivory. One of the first women to wear white at her wedding was Mary Queen of Scots, when she married François II of France. However, white was not then a tradition but rather a choice and one considered inauspicious, since white was the official colour of mourning in France at the time.

For an Indian bride, mehendi (Mehndi) or henna or hina is not just a form of decoration. Mehendi is considered to be an ancient Indian body art. Bridal Bindi (Tikali)

Bindi is the most important accessory in Indian bride's life or for Indian married woman as a symbol of their married status. It is considered as a blessed holy dot symbol of Uma or Parvati. Traditionally it is a dot of red color applied in the center of the forehead close to the eyebrows, but it can also consist of a sign or piece of jewelry worn at this location. Though bindi is used as decorative accessory for forehead, a bindi signifies female energy (shakti) and a symbol of fertility. This is probably why widows are expected to go off-bindi. The Hindus believe that a red bindi should be worn by women who are married and a black bindi is worn by single girls. A black bindi is also believed to keep the evil spirits away.

In ancient times, Hindus usedto wear red lead powder (sindhoor) or sandalwood paste to place dots on their foreheads. According to Hindu sages, red lead and sandalwood paste have cooling properties. Therefore, placing a red lead or sandalwood paste dot on the forehead between the eyes cools the nerve center associated with that location. The sages tell us that, consequently, the mind becomes calm and quiet. The tilak is also a reminder of the wedding vows.

Bindi is known by various names as kumkum, mangalya, tilak, sindoor, Pottu, Bottu or tilakam, tikli (tikali), gandha (gandh), Teep, nande.
